Mohamed Bouya Ely Vall

← Champions for Cultural Diversity 2020 Winners

Mohamed’s selfless commitment to his campus and his community has already garnered him the Bleu et Or Prize for Involvement in April 2018, and is recipient of three scholarships through RBC, Assumption, and Scholarship in Canada. The list of contributions leading to these awards range from leadership and organization through to volunteering and tutoring.

He has provided a range of support to his fellow international students at Université de Moncton, whether through his multiple terms as president of the AÉÉICUM (the Association of International Students of the Moncton Campus), as manager of the Lafrance university residence, or supporting student mental health through the Student Peer Help Center (CAPÉ).

Amazingly, he still finds time to volunteer in a seemingly endless range of causes. He has been a key part of the student-led culture nights, and in responding to student food security issues following the outbreak of the pandemic through volunteering with the student food bank.

Notably, his volunteer commitment is not limited to campus. At the community level, he has reached out to support those who are struggling with their literacy, their learning, or their finances. Mohamed provides literacy tutoring through Frontier College, is a volunteer tutor for the children of the Boys and Girls Club last year, and a participant in the “Cup of Hope 2020 Challenge” which is a fundraising activity organized as part of the Tree of Hope campaign.

He has also served as the coordinator of the Faculty of Administration’s Tax Project for two years, which is a free service offered by volunteers and helps around 300 low-income people complete their tax returns.

It would seem that all this time spent elsewhere would adversely affect his studies, yet academically he is a star student, and has been asked by multiple professors to act as a tutor, proofer, and supervisor.

His huge commitment to serving others has made him a clear winner in this year’s International Student Category.
